Technique: Macramé ~

Macramé is an ancient, crafty and versatile medium. Earliest known examples of this fiber art form have been found in the Middle East dating to the 13th century, with some argument for even older existence from pictorial history of Assyria and Babylon. Sailors are credited with being among the first to develop knotting techniques as a hobby, and more recent macramé trends have shown up in Victorian England and, of course, here in the states in the 60's and 70's! Of course, we like it because it's awesome for jewelry.

Many of our jewelry making components work great with macramé, including our buttons, links and charms. We have a few great projects in our archives (see below), and demo video of some various knotting techniques on YouTube, with guest Sandra Younger, inventor of the Knotty Do-it-All board!

One of the most basic knots for jewelry making is the square macramé knot. We did a demo video for that a few years ago and you can find that on our YouTube channel.
