Tip: Insert a T-pin into your knots before you tighten them so you can pull the knot as close to the bead as possible. If using tweezers, slip the tips through the loose knot and grasp the cord right next to the bead. As you tighten the knot will move close to bead. Remove tweezers and pull knot tight.

Steps

  1. Cut 3' of 10 lb hemp cord. Pull from both ends to pre-stretch it.
  2. Tie an overhand knot 6" from one end. Place a big-eye needle on the other end.
  3. String 1 spacer, 1 gemstone rondelle bead, and 1 spacer; pull them to the knot just made. Tie an overhand knot close to the last spacer added. Repeat this step 18 times. Remove the needle. Set the strand aside.
  4. Cut 6' of 10 lb hemp cord; stretch it.
  5. Place a big-eye needle on the cord and slide to the center. Fold the cord in half. Tie a knot 6" from the other end.
  6. String 1 Czech glass round bead; pull it to the knot just made. Tie an overhand knot close to the bead just added. Repeat this step 18 times. Cut the cord to remove the needle. Set the strand aside.
  7. Cut 3' of 20 lb hemp cord; stretch it.
  8. Tie an overhand knot 6" from one end. Place a big-eye needle on the other end.
  9. String 1 wooden bead, 1 spacer, and 1 wooden bead; pull them to the knot just made. Tie an overhand knot close to the last spacer added. Repeat this step 13 times. Remove the needle. Set the strand aside.
  10. Gather the three strands together so their first knots are paired. Pass all of the cords through the button. Tie an overhand knot with all of the cords. Secure the knot with a small amount of Hypo cement. Let dry.
  11. Gather the other ends of the three strands together and tie an overhand knot.
  12. Form a 1/2" loop with the cords that will fit over the button. Tie an overhand knot to secure the loop. Secure the knot with a small amount of Hypo cement. Let dry.
